5 Signs That Your Home Needs an Electrical Inspection

February 08, 2022

Electrical inspections are important, but how do you know when you need one? Professional electricians advise scheduling an electrical inspection every three to five years, but some houses require them more often. If you think that you need an electrical inspection, take a look around your home for some telltale signs. Here are five signs that your home needs an electrical inspection.

1. Audible Humming or Buzzing Noises

When you turn on a light switch in your home, you shouldn’t hear anything except the click of the switch. If you notice a humming or buzzing noise when you turn on a light or appliance, it might be time to call an electrician in San Diego because unusual noises can be signs of damaged wiring.

2. Dimming or Flickering Lights

Dimming or flickering lights is the second of the signs that your home needs an electrical inspection. Before you call an electrician, inspect the lightbulb itself. If the lightbulb is intact, then the most probable cause is faulty wiring or circuitry.

3. Unusual Odors and Smells

Burnt or unusual smells are never a good sign in a home. When you smell something strange, such as burnt plastic, turn of all the electrical appliances in your home. Loose or broken electrical wiring is usually the main cause of this smell, and it can create electrical fires if left unchecked.

4. Tripping Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers and fuses prevent electrical overload and damage in your home. So, when your fuses or circuit breakers trip, that means something has overloaded your system. If you haven’t installed new appliances in your home recently, a tripped circuit breaker or fuse is a sign of an electrical issue in your home.

5. Small Electrical Shocks

While electrical shocks are rare, they can occur if you have a faulty electrical system. As soon as you feel a small electrical shock from one or multiple outlets, call a local electrician. Sometimes, these shocks are the result of faulty switches, but the main cause is usually damaged or faulty wiring.
